Original Oregon

Rugged Oregon has plenty to offer the discerning traveller from its quirky capital Portland to the wine country, stunning coastline and beautiful outdoor spaces. After visiting Portland with its art spots and gardens, get on the road to the wine country of the state and then to the beaches. Travelling inland there are numerous outdoor activities on offer including white water rafting and riding. The Long Hollow Ranch nearby to Bend offers three and six night stays, perfect for a spot of riding interspersed within your fly-drive holiday. A highlight of a stay in the state is a trip to the Crater Lake National Park, a truly stunning and remote national park.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Portland
Arrive today in Portland from the UK to begin your fly-drive holiday around the state of Oregon.
Day 2 - Portland
'Keep Portland Weird' is the city's famous slogan and it rings true in Portland. The city has some beautiful green spaces including the Washington Park which includes the Japanese Garden and Rose Test Garden. Discover the art of the city at the Portland Art Museum, spread over six floors. Pittock Mansion is a great place to take a wander around the mansion and gardens, it was the once home of the Portland pioneers. Don't leave the city without going tax free shopping in downtown Portland in...
Day 3 - Portland - Wine Country (50 miles)
Journey just outside an hour out of Portland and arrive at the Willamette Valley, home to a huge number of wineries and tasting rooms. Here explore this beautiful region by visiting a couple of the wineries and looking out to the beautiful landscapes.
Day 4 - Wine Country - Oregon's Coast (70 miles)
We recommend today travelling onto the Salishan Spa & Golf Resort set in Gleneden Beach. Use this as your base to explore the beach towns of Lincoln City and Newport. The latter has remained a fishing village and has plenty of shops and restaurants.
Day 5 - Oregon's Coast
Try to make the time to drive The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway running its way along the Oregon coastline and Highway 101. If you visit between November and June, you might have the opportunity to see the migrating gray whales. Along the way, take the opportunity to get out of the car at the scenic vistas and also see the nine lighthouses along the route.
Day 6 - Oregon's Coast (68 miles)
You may wish to explore further south down the coast, situated an hour from the Salishan Resort, the town of Florence. On the drive down, stop at Cape Perpetua, a natural landmark of forests, pools and shells, the Heceta Head Lighthouse and Sea Lion Caves, to see these mammals. Stay in the town of Florence this evening.
Day 7 - Oregon's Coast - Grants Pass (165 miles)
After the morning on the coast, head inland to Grants Pass making your way further south.
Day 8 - Grants Pass
Spend the day outdoors in Grants Pass where outdoor pursuits are not to be missed; go hiking, biking and rafting. If you're feeling adventurous, Rogue River is a great spot for white water rafting.
Day 9 - Grants Pass - Crater Lake National Park (83 miles)
Wake up early today and journey into beautiful Crater Lake National Park where there are 20 scenic viewpoints (the best time to visit is June to October). Explore Wizard Island and the Phantom Ship, but be sure to book all excursions well in advance as lodging and activities sell-out in this park. The Crater Lake Lodge is a great spot to dine at for lunch or dinner.
Day 10 - Crater Lake National Park - Bend (90 miles)
Located in Central Oregon, Bend offers further outdoor pursuits; hike in Smith Rock and go white water rafting in The Lower Deschutes. Whilst here, you might wish to drive the 82 mile loop road known as the Mckenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway which offers view of the Cascade Mountains.
Day 12 - Bend - Portland (180 miles)
Travel back to Portland today for your flight home to the UK or stay a couple of nights exploring this quirky city further.
