Day 4 - Springfield, MO (313 miles)
Travel from Springfield Illinois today to Springfield Missouri, stopping for lunch at the Ariston Cafe and visiting the Henry's Rabbit Ranch in Staunton to see the Route 66 memorabilia. You'll drive over the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge that divides the two states and en route you may also wish to visit the Meramec Caverns.
Day 5 - Oklahoma City, OK (283 miles)
This morning drive from Missouri into Oklahoma on the I-44 where you will see many signs of the old highway. If you wish to make a detour on route, the 14 mile stretch of Route 66 in the south east corner of Kansas is well preserved with signs of Route 66.
Day 6 - Amarillo, TX (263 miles)
Oklahoma is the place to drive on the old highway and this part of Route 66 involves driving on 200 miles of flat land. After travelling through the Texas Panhandle, cowboy land, you’ll arrive at Amarillo, with its cowboy feel.
Day 7 - Albuquerque, NM (287 miles)
In the Old Days, it was possible to drive the Route 66 to Albuquerque but now you'll have to drive the I-40. Along the road you'll see the ghost towns. In Albuquerque itself, Route 66 goes through the centre of the city. Whilst here, you may wish to visit the Biological Park with its botanical gardens and zoo. There's also the Balloon Museum; Albuquerque's annual festival, the Balloon Fiesta, is well known.
Day 9 - Flagstaff, AZ (325 miles)
Enjoy an interesting drive from Albuquerque to Flagstaff; stop off to see the Inscription Rock (El Morro National Monument, NM). At the border with Arizona, there are a number of gift shops and old Route 66 signs which you can take photographs of. En route, we recommend visiting the Petrified Forest National Park. If you have just an hour, drive through the park, stop at Kachina Point and also at the Rainbow Forest Musuem where you'll see petrified wood and fossils.
Day 10 - Grand Canyon, AZ (73 miles)
The destination of today is the Grand Canyon National Park where you will spend two nights. We highly recommend taking a helicopter tour one day departing from the South Rim and lasting 25-45 minutes.
Day 12 - Needles, CA (238 miles)
From Seligman to Kingman, drive on Route 66 passing through the Hualapai Valley and the Hualapai Reservation Lands. Enjoy a meal at the River Runners restaurant on Route 66 by Peach Springs and see the filling station here. You could also dine at the Frontier Cafe in Truxton. Stop off at Kingman after travelling on Highway 66 around the Peacock Mountains where you can pause for a break.
