Florida Keys

Driving an hour from Miami, enter the realm of calm and carefree living in The Florida Keys. Spread over 126 miles and linked by 42 bridges on the scenic US Route 1, this area is made up of the five regions of Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West. Perfect for diving, snorkelling, kayaking or just relaxing, The Florida Keys have something very different to offer in the state.

The first island, Key Largo has plenty of water activities to be enjoyed; amazing diving in the only natural coral reef in the country, glass bottom boat tours in the John Pennekamp State Park, swimming with dolphins and a day trip on a boat to the Everglades National Park. Islamorada is the romantic island and known worldwide for its fishing opportunities. Take a photo on the 7 Mile Drive in Marathon and visit the Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Centre here, both non-profit organizations, where at the latter you can swim and play with dolphins! Perfect for a day trip, charter a boat in the Big Pine Key on knee deep waters and go kayaking and have a picnic here, you might even spot a miniature deer native to this area.

Arriving in Key West, the final island, you’ll notice the atmosphere change. Enjoy sunset sail trips, LED paddle boarding and walk around vibrant Duval Street where music and entertainment can be enjoyed year-round every evening at Mallory Square. Soak up the atmosphere in this charming area with its palm tree lined roads with quaint houses, lighthouse, dive shops, theatres and historic buildings. On a visit to Key West, you may wish to visit the aquarium, take a photo at the Southernmost Point, tour Ernest Hemmingway’s House and Museum and take a ride on the Conch Train.

Taking a two hour ferry from Key West, arrive at the Dry Tortugas National Park once a fort and prison. Spend the morning and early afternoon on the beaches at this spectacular setting. Before leaving the Keys, either by plane from Key West or by driving back on US Route 1, be sure to try some famous Key Lime Pie!
