The Splendours Of Quebec

Our 10 day flexible fly-drive takes you to some of Quebec’s Splendours. Begin your Quebec Holiday in the vibrant French Canadian City of Montreal. Follow the St Lawrence River through rural Quebec and one of the first European settlements of Trois-Rivieres. Experience the old world charm of Quebec City with its cobblestone streets and fortified city wall.

Travel through the picturesque region of Charlevoix and enjoy a 3-hour whale watching cruise in search of humpback, finback and minke whales. Follow the Riviere-du-Loup to the Eastern Townships where you can visit the chocolate museum of Bromont and L'Orpailleur Winery in Dumham before returning to Montreal.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Travel to Montreal

Take your flight from the UK to Montreal arriving in the afternoon. Collect your hire vehicle from the airport and make your way to your downtown hotel. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore the city centre and enjoy the incredible choice of dining Montreal has to offer.

Day 2 - Montreal to Quebec City (164 miles)

Depart Montreal and head north to Quebec City, following the St. Lawrence River. If you are in no rush today, we suggest taking the Route 138 which avoids the highways and allows you to experience rural Quebec and the remaining farms from the seigneurial regime. You will pass through Trois-Rivieres, one of the first European settlements dating back to 1634 and the point from which French explorers embarked on their North American discovery.

Day 3 - Quebec City

Wander around charming Old Quebec with its cobblestone streets and fortified city wall. Old Quebec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with seventeenth century architecture and complimented by artisan shops, Parisian cafes, landscaped parks, and numerous monuments. Take a stroll on the Plains of Abraham and visit the historic Fairmont Chateau Frontenac for a guided tour or afternoon tea.

Day 4 - Quebec City to La Malbaie (87 miles)

Depart today to La Malbaie, in Quebec’s beautiful Charlevoix region.Along the way, you may stop to visit the Sainte Anne de Beaupré shrine. Take time to explore the scenic area, especially Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie National Park, a diversion definitely worth taking where the beauty of which has inspired generations of artists.

Day 5 - Whalewatching in Tadoussac and La Baie (106 miles)

Continue to follow the St Lawrence River to Tadoussac, at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord, where you will board a whale-watching river cruise. Your experienced naturalist will explain the habits of the Finback, Minke and Beluga whales that frequent this region during the summer. In the afternoon follow the Saguenay River and beautiful Saguenay fjord to the small city of La Baie. (dinner is included today at your accommodation Auberge des 21)

Day 6 - Sightseeing Saguenay & Lac Jean

Visit the attractions of the region such the Historical Village of Val-Jalbert, an authentic 1920's town with original period buildings, theatrical shows and the Ouiatchouan Falls. There are many other cultural, outdoor and sports activities that this area has to offer such as the Fjord shuttle that stops at a number of locations along the fjord (admissions not included). (breakfast & dinner included today at Auberge des 21)

Day 7 - Saguenay to Riviere-du-Loup (94 miles + 1 hour 15 minutes ferry)

Departure from La Baie and the Saguenay region, follow the opposite side of Saguenay Fjord to Saint-Simeon on the St Lawrence River to take the across the other side to Riviere-du-Loup. The crossing of the St. Lawrence River will take 1 ¼ hours (ferry crossing fare not included).

Day 8 - Riviere-du-Loup to Eastern Townships (264 miles)

Today you will travel to Quebec’s Eastern Townships region. You have the opportunity to visit the small chocolate museum in Bromont along the way. Maybe you would like to stop at the L’Orpailleur Winery in Dumham, approximately 30 km south of Bromont. Continue to Knowlton, a Victorian style town. In the evening, you may just walk around this lovely town & relax in one of the cafés or restaurants.

Day 9 - Explore Eastern Townships

While visiting the Eastern Townships region, don’t miss a visit to the Abbey of St. Benoît du Lac, Magog, North Hatley, Coaticook with its canyon, park & suspension bridge and the Beaulne Museum where you can admire costumes and textiles, fine arts and decorative arts, as well as local heritage.

Day 10 - Return to Montreal (66 miles) and Travel Home

Today is a short drive back to Montreal where you will drop your hire vehicle and check in for your homeward or onward flight.
