Yarmouth Overview

The picturesque town of Yarmouth is the largest fishing village in Atlantic Canada, with some stunning 19th century architecture and a keen sense of its own heritage. This is the perfect place to soak up plenty of Nova Scotian culture, lying as it does at the intersection between the province’s French-speaking settlers, known as the Arcadie, and English-speaking communities whose founders are commonly known as ‘the planters’. Indigenous Mi’kmaq peoples are known to have settled in the region at least 5,000 years ago, too and Yarmouth itself was a prime fishing site.

The town and its surrounding Arcadian Shores area is dotted with fascinating local museums, picturesque lighthouses and beautiful beaches, so ask your Destination Expert about hiring a car to get out and explore.

Whilst here look out for ‘Music of the Bay’ events. During summer months local Arcadian music is played nightly in local restaurants to combine two of the cultures cornerstones – good food and live music. It’s a party you won’t want to miss!

The Arcadian skies are renowned and this area of Nova Scotia was the first in North America to receive Starlight certification, so be sure to book onto a star-gazing tour, or simply venture out after night fall and take in the astronomical wonders on show.
