Enjoy culture and history in a city setting in the capital Lima, before embarking on a journey across the highlands via Machu Picchu. In Chile, transfer to Easter Island to explore and discover the silent wonder of the Moai statues. Some time to explore Valparaiso is the perfect end to your trip, and will give you a real taste of the colours and culture of Chile.

Itinerary


Day 1 - UK – Lima
Upon arrival in Lima transfer to the smart Miraflores neighbourhood. This area is packed with interesting shops and restaurants, and is a great place to get settled into Peruvian life. Miraflores overlooks the shimmering Pacific Ocean, and is close to the arts district of Barranco, which boasts a variety of museums, art galleries and cafés.

Day 2 - Lima
Explore the historic city and soak up the plentiful culture. The striking fountain in the centre of the Plaza Mayor (or Plaza de Armas) dates back to the 1650s, and the square is impressively bordered by a parade of bright yellow buildings, including the Municipal Palace, as well as the majestic cathedral. The Larco Museum is a great stop to learn about the history of Lima and Peru, and has artefacts that date back over 3,000 years.

Day 3 - Lima – Cuzco – Sacred Valley
Today, travel through the mountainous landscape and discover some of the highlights of the Sacred Valley. Explore the charming town of Ollantaytambo and its accompanying impressive fortress, before doing some shopping at the local craft market. Your accommodation is the serene Sol y Luna Lodge & Spa, boasting comfortable rooms and picturesque views.

Day 4 - Sacred Valley
Today you are free to explore the valley at your leisure. The valley boasts many activities for visitors to choose from, ranging from the relaxing to the exhilarating. You can spend the day unwinding at the hotel, relaxing in the gardens or enjoying a treatment at the indulgent spa. There are cooking classes and ceramic workshops to try, or more adventurous guests can experience trekking, white water rafting, ziplining or kayaking.

Day 5 - Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu by train
Board a comfortable train for your journey through the valley to the town of Aguas Calientes, gateway to Machu Picchu. The famous fortress is an endlessly fascinating site; learn about the history of the Inca empire and the construction of the citadel itself. The spectacular setting with a backdrop formed by the Andean mountains makes for a breath-taking sight. Tonight, stay at the Casa del Sol, a boutique hotel with plush rooms and a luxurious spa.

Day 6 - Machu Picchu – Cuzco
This morning you are free to do some more exploring around Machu Picchu. Climb up to the top of Huayna Picchu for bird’s eye views of the citadel, or trek to the Sun Gate for more spectacular views. In the afternoon wander the narrow streets of Aguas Calientes, and perhaps take the time to do some souvenir shopping. Continue your journey on to Cuzco.

Day 7 - Cuzco
Explore this city, a captivating living museum full of culture and history. Major sights such as Koricancha, the ancient temple to the sun, and the imposing fortress at Sacsayhuaman shouldn’t be missed. In the city centre, wander from the central square to the bohemian district of San Blas, where you can enjoy beautiful architecture and charming cafés.

Day 8 - Cuzco – Santiago
This morning enjoy the lively scene at the Plaza de Armas square, and browse the local craft market, keeping an eye out for local silver and clothes handmade from llama and alpaca fleece. In the early afternoon transfer via plane to Santiago. You will arrive in the late evening, and stay overnight at the airport hotel.

Day 9 - Santiago – Easter Island
This morning depart early for Easter Island, one of the most remote and magical places in the world. You will instantly recognise the Moai statues, dotted around the island. Hanga Roa town is home to an interesting museum that details the island’s history. Visitors to the island can also choose to take part in activities such as hiking, horseback riding and cycling tours. Tonight stay at the Taha Tai hotel and relax in the outdoor pool before enjoying dinner with views out over the ocean.

Day 10 - Easter Island
You have two full days to explore the island and uncover its mysteries. Rano Raraku National Park is home to about half of the Moai statues, and is the place they were originally sculpted.

Day 11 - Easter Island
Recline and relax on Anakena beach, or trek to the summit of Terevaka, a volcanic hilly formation. For great views try the Rano Kau volcanic crater. In the evening, watch the magnificent sunset from Tongariki or Tahai.

Day 12 - Easter Island – Santiago – Valparaiso
Leave Easter Island’s mysterious landscape behind for the charming city of Valparaiso. Wander the tangle of streets and alleyways and soak up the jumbled charm of Peru’s second city. Find your way to Cerro Concepcion and indulge at some of the city’s finest eateries, such as seafood restaurant Café Turri.

Day 13 - Valparaiso
Today you are free to enjoy the city at your leisure. Admire some of the best street art in Latin America in the neighbourhoods of Alegre, Bellavista and Cerro Concepcion. Spend the day discovering the culture and history of the city, known as ‘La Perla del Pacifico’ (the Pearl of the Pacific). Nearby is the town of Vina del Mar where you can enjoy the vibrant parks and gardens or relax on the beach.

Make your way to the airport for your flights back to the UK.
