Overview


On this tour you will discover all the major highlights of Peru – a magical Latin American country like no other. Here, explore the remnants of the Inca empire, admire stunning alpine vistas and wander charming villages bursting with culture. 
 
Lima is a vibrant city, and the ideal entry point to Peru’s charms. Spend a few days exploring the gastronomy, history, architecture and culture, staying in luxurious surroundings in the Miraflores district. 
 
Next, you’ll find yourself in Arequipa, Peru’s ‘White City’. Aptly nicknamed, here you’ll find beautiful buildings carved from pale volcanic rock. A trip through Colca Canyon allows you to admire the phenomenal natural Peruvian landscapes, before you arrive at Lake Titicaca. The world’s highest navigable lake boasts sparkling water and a fascinating culture. Discover the floating Uros reed islands, and hike up to the top of Taquile Island for picture-perfect views.
 
From here, journey over to Cuzco, which was an important Incan city. Explore multiple unique ancient ruins and fortresses, learning more about the fascinating culture of the place. The Sacred Valley is a verdant area home to spectacular views, where you can explore local markets and shop for colourful souvenirs.
 
Machu Picchu is, of course, the pinnacle of any trip to Peru. The ancient citadel is a breath-taking sight, and this tour includes two entrances, guaranteeing you ample time to explore. Over 13 days you will be awed by the highlights of Peru, enjoying jaw-dropping sights, delicious cuisine, friendly locals and unforgettable memories.

Itinerary


Day 1 - UK – Lima
Your first stop on the tour is Lima, Peru’s capital. For the next two nights you’ll be staying in the stylish Miraflores district, which boasts a fantastic choice of eateries and cafés. Here you can take advantage of a range of places to visit and explore, including museums and galleries. Nearby, find the arts district of Barranco, with fantastic views over the ocean.

Day 2 - Lima
Spend the day discovering more of Lima’s charms. Arranged around the main square (Plaza de Armas), you’ll find a lot of the city’s important buildings. Admire ornate architecture and plenty of fascinating churches and historical sites. There’s lots to discover in Lima, and a good place to start is the Larco Museum, which houses over 40,000 artefacts detailing thousands of years of Peru’s history, going back to pre-Inca times.

Day 3 - Arequipa
A short air transfer takes you to Peru’s ‘White City’ of Arequipa. This is a cultural highlight of Peru; a city bursting with charm, beauty and culture. The Santa Catalina convent is spread over a vast 20,000 square metres, full of fascinating cloisters and art. The Iglesia de La Compañía is a beautiful little baroque-style church, perfect for an afternoon visit.

Day 4 - Arequipa
Spend the day taking in the grand views around Arequipa. The Yunahuara Viewpoint is one of the very best places to bask in the vistas, and visitors here are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding volcanos. Arequipa is truly one of the most gorgeous cities in Latin America, and the combination of the white buildings and the snow-capped mountain background make for an unrivalled view. Arequipa is also an important site on the Peruvian culinary scene.

Day 5 - Arequipa – Colca Canyon
Leave Arequipa in the morning and head towards the Colca Canyon. One of the deepest in the world, the canyon is a formidable sight. Your travel across the canyon reveals the complexity and diversity of the landscape, and you’ll want to make sure you have your camera to hand to capture the jaw-dropping scenery. Stop in Chivay and spend a tranquil afternoon at the La Calera hot springs.

Day 6 - Colca Canyon – Lake Titicaca
Make your way to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint early this morning to spot Andean condors – these huge birds are among the largest that can fly. As you continue your journey, stop along the way to browse in charming local markets. Tonight you will arrive at Puno, adjacent to the picturesque Lake Titicaca. Watch the colours dance on the water as the sun sets, before settling in to your hotel for the night.

Day 7 - Lake Titicaca – Uros & Taquile Islands
Spend the day on Lake Titicaca. Discover the Uros tortora reed islands – man-made islands that float on the lake’s surface. The lake is also home to Taquile Island, on which over 2,000 people live. Admire the views from the island, which is the highest point around the lake. In Andean folklore, Lake Titicaca was the birthplace of the sun, and looking around here it’s not difficult to understand why this place was sacred.

Day 8 - Lake Titicaca – Cuzco
Today you will drive across the mountainous terrain and stop at La Raya, which is the most vertiginous point of your journey. Here, browse stalls and markets where locals sell hand-woven clothes and other crafts. Continue north, and make sure to keep an eye on the ever-changing scenes as you move towards Cuzco. The city was once the capital of the Inca empire, and is full of historical artefacts and sites.

Day 9 - Cuzco
Discover the history-rich city of Cuzco. The massive Sacsayhuaman structure – believed to be an ancient Incan sun calendar – is a highlight, but the Cuzco area is packed with fascinating sights. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and any stroll around the centre will reveal countless architectural wonders. Wander through San Blas, a lovely neighbourhood full of meandering streets and colourful houses.

Day 10 - Sacred Valley of the Incas
Today you will discover the fertile Sacred Valley, full of sweeping vistas and mountainous views. In Chinchero, learn about traditional crafts and browse shops and markets. Further on, Ollantaytambo town is characterised by its magnificent staggered ruins. Accommodation tonight is at the Sonesta Posada del Inca Yucay, where you can enjoy dinner at the on-site Inkafé Restaurant.

Day 11 - Machu Picchu
Today you will be exploring the icon that is the pinnacle of most Peruvian holidays – Machu Picchu. You will arrive by train in Aguas Calientes, and from there journey up to the magnificent citadel. Abandoned by the Incas, Machu Picchu was rediscovered by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Your accommodation for the next night is at the El MaPi by Inkaterra hotel, whose La Cafeteria restaurant prepares a complimentary buffet breakfast and can prepare ‘To Go’ lunches for explorers!

Day 12 - Machu Picchu – Cuzco
This morning you can return to Machu Picchu and explore independently. As part of your tour, a second entrance this morning is included. In the morning, at either 7am or 10am you may climb upwards to the Huayna Picchu mountain, which offers spectacular views over the Incan citadel. Spend the morning exploring new parts, or revisiting favourite spots you discovered yesterday. This afternoon, catch the train to Poroy before driving to Cuzco, where you’ll spend your final Peruvian evening.

Day 13 - Cuzco – UK
