Outside of Colombia’s bustling cities you’ll find a plethora of verdant landscapes to explore. Holidays to Tayrona National Park are the perfect antidote to the bustle of city life; here you’ll be visiting one of the country’s rural highlights where you can discover immaculate white sandy beaches and undulating hills blanketed in wild forest. The park stretches some 35 kilometres along the coast, covering over 12,000 hectares of land and 3,000 hectares of sea. Starting on the picturesque Caribbean Coast and rising to an altitude of 900 metres at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, the landscapes are as varied as barren cacti fields, rainforest and pre-Hispanic ruins.
Most visitors choose Tayrona National Park holidays for the chance to enjoy unspoilt Caribbean beaches, however the strong currents and rip tides mean most are unsuitable for swimming. There are some designated areas for swimming and snorkelling, some may need to be reached on foot – these may require a walk of between 30 and 90 minutes through lush jungle, scenic landscapes and beautifully picturesque beaches. Alternatively, relax on the white sands and enjoy the spectacular setting. Many of the beaches are set within deep, cerulean bays backed by mountains, with welcome shade provided by soaring coconut palms.
During holidays to Tayrona National Park, our favourite place to stay is the Ecohabs, providing relative luxury despite the remote location. The wooden structures are perched on forest-clad hills and provide an immersive experience, where you can fall asleep to the cackle of playful monkeys and wake to the ebb and flow of the Caribbean waves breaking on the beach below. Excursions can be booked directly from the Ecohabs, such as snorkelling trips, horseback riding and guided walks through the jungle.
