Strung out along Brazil’s southernmost shoreline, the Emerald Coast encompasses the attractive port city of Florianopolis and the island of Santa Catarina, both idyllic beach escapes for Brazilians and international tourists alike. The state of Santa Catarina stretches for some 560 kilometres of stunning coastline, where turquoise waters lap against sandy shores, giving the region its romantic name. Forget the crowded beaches of Rio de Janeiro – on Emerald Coast holidays it’s often just you and the sea, and many of the beaches remain half-deserted even in the high season. Fishing boats painted in colourful, peeling paint bob in the bay and residents are quick to smile – this is relaxed Brazilian living at its finest. If you require a little daytime stimulation there are plenty of activities to keep you amused, like surfing and whale-watching, and after dark the parties in this part of the world are legendary – laid-back dancing that goes on until the small hours.
The Emerald Coast is popular with visitors from across Latin America and is less frequented by European tourists, despite its German ancestry. Each year there is an Oktoberfest celebration in the town of Blumenau on Ilha de Santa Catarina, and Alpine-style architecture and brewed beer further complement the Bavarian scene.
The area also affords some of Brazil’s highest standards of living, with excellent infrastructure and luxurious resorts such as Ponta dos Ganchos, an exclusive paradise set on its own peninsula, surrounded by tropical rainforest and oyster farms. The region’s fishing communities provide some of the freshest oysters you’ll ever taste, and seafood barbecues are an experience not to be missed.
