Patagonia Holidays

There are few places in the world better designed for outdoor exploration than in Argentina’s wilds of Patagonia.

The most southerly tip of South America, Patagonia spreads across both Argentina and Chile, with incredible scenery mirrored across both countries. In Argentina, the area is protected by the UNESCO-listed Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, where massive mountains rival bright blue glaciers for awe-inspiring panoramas. Within the park, there are two ways to explore.

Start at El Calafate for the most accessible way to view the incredible Perito Moreno; the 250-square-kilometre glacier is fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and is notable in that it is continually advancing, while most of the world’s glaciers are retreating. Boat trips across Lago Argentino afford amazing views of the glacier, but the best way to experience this natural wonder is with a short trek across the ice with the assistance of crampons and a knowledgeable guide. Time your visit well and you may get to see enormous chunks of ice calving off the glacier and into the lake.

In the northern reaches of the park, El Chaltén shows a different side to Patagonia. Here you can view the Viedma Glacier, but it’s the mountains that are the real draw. The town of El Chaltén is the gateway to some of Argentina’s best trekking routes, snaking over and around Mount Torre and Mount Fitz Roy. For holidays to both Argentina and Chile, this is an ideal place to cross over as the region borders with Chile’s famous Torres del Paine National Park.

Patagonia holidays to Argentina and Chile

A popular choice is to combine Patagonia holidays to Argentina with the neighbouring region in Chile. Often the best way to do this is by boat, where the highlight is leaving Ushuaia and landing at Cape Horn, weather permitting. Here you can visit the world’s southernmost point, following in the footsteps of explorers and keeping an eye out for penguins, seals and whales. The route to Chile will take you through the Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan, navigating through glaciers and islands to Punta Arenas. The best time to visit is between September and April, and during this time many three- and four-night cruises operate the route.
