Overview

Day 1 - Depart the UK for Kolkata
Fly overnight from the UK to Kolkata

Day 2 - Arrive in Kolkata
Arrive in Kolkata, where you will be greeted by a Western and Oriental representative, transferred to your hotel and assisted with check in. The city of Calcutta, now called Kolkata, was established by the British in 1690 and was the capital of British India until 1911. It is the proud intellectual capital of India, with a rich contemporary cultural life. The city retains some of India’s most striking colonial buildings, and is also home to the country’s first underground railway.

Day 3 - Kolkata
This morning you head out for a Heritage Walk of Dalhousie Square, now a World Heritage Site. The walk takes place in the morning so that you can take in the architecture and history of the city’s many unique and spectacular buildings without being disturbed by the hectic traffic of Kolkata. Day 4 - Kolkata - Guwahati
After breakfast depart Kolkatta and fly to Guwahati. On arrival in Guwahati you will be greeted by a Western and Oriental representative and taken on a short sightseeing tour of the city. Drive up Nilachal Hill to see the holy Kamakhya temple and visit the poignant Commonwealth War Graves cemetery before embarking your cruise vessel. This evening you will set sail along the mighty Brahmaputra River

Day 5 - Khirakata
The day is spent mostly cruising upstream with jungle-covered hills rising on either side, often battling against strong currents. We have time though to pause and visit the north bank village of Khirakata, with its lush green fields of vegetables and corn.

Day 6 - Tullugaon
Leaving the hills behind enjoy your first taste of wilderness sailing past sand banks that look like icebergs on either side. The boat will moor for a visit to Tullugaon, a bank side village with large sugarcane plantations. You can see weavers at work in their homes, as well as the production of jaggary, a completely unrefined sugar made from the sugar cane juice being reduced and set in blocks. Day 7 - Tezpur
Continue the cruise along the Brahmaputra to reach Tezpur, where after lunch we visit the 6th century Da Parbatia temple ruins. Continuing on with a exploration of the town by cycle rickshaw, stopping at Cole Park where you can see medieval stone carvings saved from sites all over the region, and passing the bungalow once lived in by Alexander Bruce, pioneer of the tea industry. After the tour is completed the boat will be waiting at the town’s waterfront for you to embark.

Day 8 - Nameri National Park
After an early breakfast disembark and drive for approximately two hours to the Nameri National Park at the foot of the blue hills of Arunachal Pradesh. Here you can enjoy a float trip of around two hours duration down the Jia Bhoreli River through the park, with excellent bird watching (look out for the great hornbills) even the chance of sighting wild elephant. After lunch there will be a village walk before returning to the boat.

Day 9 - Kaziranga National Park
The boat continues upstream, passing below a seemingly endless new bridge across the vast width of the river bed, to moor at Steemer Ghat, a lovely beach backed by jungle-covered hills. In the afternoon drive to Kaziranga National Park’s Western Range for a jeep safari and to scan the wilderness from an observation tower. Day 10 - Kaziranga National Park
Disembark the boat before dawn to drive to Kaziranga’s Central Range for an early morning elephant ride, this offers a wonderful way to get really close to the rhinos and other animals. After breakfast at a lodge, we drive to a Mising tribal village where you can see their distinctive houses raised on piles, then visit a nearby tea garden to see how tea is grown and processed. Day 11 - Guwahati - Kolkata
An early start to disembark the boat and start the 4 hour (approximately) drive back to Guwahati airport for your flight back to Kolkata. Arrive in Kolkata, where you will be greeted by a Western and Oriental representative, transferred to your hotel and assisted with check in.

Day 12 - Kolkata – Home
You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport for your return flight home.
