Kanha National Park Overview

Kanha National Park is one of India’s largest national parks, covering over 900 square kilometres, and lies south east of Jabalpur in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Aside from a healthy population of Bengal tigers it is home to leopard, wild dog, sloth bear, swamp deer, and over 200 species of birds.

Kanha National Park comprises the forests of the Banjar and the Halon valley which have long been famous for their wide diversity of wildlife. The park was created in 1955 and was extended to become Kanha Tiger reserve in 1974 under India’s project Tiger, which aims to ensure a viable population of Bengal tigers in their natural habitat.

Kanha National Park is regarded as being one of the best maintained National Parks in Asia and has an outstanding conservation record; One of it’s most notable achievements has been protecting the rare hardground Swamp Deer (Barasingha) from near extinction.
