Spend a few days in the beautiful historic quarter of Old Havana before picking up your car to drive south-west into the picturesque Pinar del Rio province, staying in Vinales and Las Terrazas to explore the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve.
Continue via Cienfuegos to the stunning colonial gem of Trinidad with its wonderful music venues and a stunning coastline nearby. Trinidad is the perfect base from which to explore independently areas with connections to the Revolution such as Santa Clara, where you will find Che Guevara's mausoleum and the Bay of Pigs. Your self-drive itinerary ends in Varadero where we will arrange for your car to be collected and you can spend a few well deserved days of rest on the perfect white sand beaches of Varadero to finish off your Cuban adventure.
Day 1 - Havana
Arrive in Havana and transfer to your hotel in Old Havana.
This morning take a half day guided city tour of Havana visiting the any plazas, the Havana Club rum factory and orientate yourself so you can decide on where you wish to return and explore in more depth. End your day by watching the sunset along the Malecon.
Today is free for you to explore this fascinating city at your own pace. Learn more of the turbulent history of Cuba by visiting the numerous museums, enjoy a coffee or Mojito while watching the world go by in one the beautiful plaza's or wander the cobbled streets soaking up the unique atmosphere in this romantic city.
Pick up your hire car to depart Havana today to drive the two-hour journey south-west to Vinales. The Vinales Valley is a unique landscape of tobacco plantations, farmland and mogotes (limestone outcrops). Vinales is a sleepy town with a few local restaurants and bars that are worth a visit if you wish to interact with the locals.
Free time to explore Pinar del Rio province. You can arrange optional tours for horse-riding or cycling if you wish. Visit one of the remarkable networks of caves, visit a tobacco factory and learn how cigars are made by hand.
A short drive from Vinales takes you to the small community of Las Terrazas where your hotel La Moka is located. This community was built to protect the local environment and to generate employment for the surrounding area. There are several locally run restaurants and cafes, serving locally farmed produce. Activities in the area include walking trails, bird watching and waterfalls.
Today is a longer drive, between 4 - 5 hours. You can divert via the Zapata Peninsula where there are wetlands that are home to numerous species of birds as well as crocodiles. Stop at Playa iron where you can visit the museum and learn about the Invasion of The Bay of Pigs. You will overnight at the charming colonial La Union Hotel in CIenfuegos.
A short drive from Cienfuegos takes you to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Trinidad. This beautiful city has been restored to its former glory, brightly coloured buildings, cobbled streets and wonderful museums and shops selling local arts and crafts. A full day is required to explore this fascinating city.
Time to explore Trinidad and surrounding small towns independently or perhaps spend a few hours relaxing on the nearby Ancon beach. Drive to the valley of the sugar mills and learn about when Cuba used to be a major supplier of sugar cane. For nature lovers head up in to the Escambray Mountains and take a walking trail to one of the waterfalls.
Drive from Trinidad back towards Havana and out to Varadero, just along the north coast of Cuba to arrive at your beach front luxury resort, the Paradisus Princesa del Mar. Along your journey stop off at Santa Clara to visit the museum of Che Guevara. On arrival to Varadero drop your car at the rental depot and take a local taxi to your hotel.
