Set on the shores of its namesake lake, Wanaka is a New Zealand holiday destination with much to offer all year round. One of the country’s more popular skiing destinations during winter months (the UK’s summer, so a great option when Europe and North America’s slopes are out of season); the town has plenty of charms, and its surrounding natural beauty is captivating whenever you choose to visit.
The lake itself provides a wide variety of pursuits, from a gentle kayaking tour to jet-skiing and parasailing. A variety of lake cruises are also available, including an eco-cruise and tour of Mou Waho Island. The small island in the lake’s centre is home to plenty of wildlife and a hike to its highest point reaps the rewards of incredible 360° views of the area.
There’s plenty to do back on land too. When the mountains aren’t covered in snow they’re still a haven for active holiday makers with a penchant for hiking or climbing. You might prefer to take a 4x4 tour to some of the more remote spots, or explore the landscape on horseback.
Local vineyards offer tours and tastings, so if you’re a wine-lover be sure to pay a visit. In the town of Wanaka itself there are plenty of eateries and bars when you can enjoy a local vintage along with a delicious meal, too.
