Covering more than 50,000 square kilometres, the Selous National Park is over three times the size of the Serengeti. Within its broad borders the park is home to a plentiful range of habitats; from shimmering lakes, natural hot springs and tangled acacia woodland to riverine forest and an enormous expanse of open grassland.
The reserve’s diverse environments mean a wide range of wildlife can be found here; on Selous National Park holidays you’re likely to spot lions, leopards, roan antelopes and kudus. Between the Selous and neighbouring Ruaha National Park you’ll find the continent’s largest herds of buffalo, elephant and hippo, and huge numbers of crocodiles. Lucky spotters may even encounter the endangered African hunting dog.
There are several ways to explore the park, and holidays to Selous are popular due to the choice of wildlife viewing activities. It’s possible to explore the reserve on foot, in a traditional safari vehicle or even by boat, as the reserve is segmented by Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji. On a walking safari you’re more likely to come into contact with large animals such as elephant, buffalo and even lion – at a safe distance! Discover the park by boat and your guide will navigate the lakes and channels of the river, able to approach animals such as crocodile and hippo unobtrusively. Game drives are the most comfortable way to explore, and often afford sightings of large groups of big animals around the park’s five lakes.
Within the park there are only a handful of camps, and due to its size the safari trails never feel crowded. Lodges are in the traditional safari style: low-key, unfussy establishments with a focus on conservation. The park is easily reached by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam.
