Famous for its virgin coral reefs and diverse marine life, it’s not hard to see why Bazaruto holidays are some of the most popular in Mozambique. The tiny archipelago of just six islands can be found in the Mozambique Channel 700 kilometres north of the capital, Maputo, and feels as far flung from civilisation as you can imagine. With very few permanent residents and just the sea for company, visitors to this area will find amazing tranquillity and an abundance of wildlife. The Bazaruto Marine National Park protects an array of flora and fauna across the islands.
Just 37 kilometres long and seven kilometres wide, Bazaruto Island is the largest of the islands and is characterised by undulating sand dunes, its interior thickly blanketed in grassland. Benguerra Island is just 11 kilometres long, though it is even more diverse with grasses, tidal flats, freshwater lakes and forests, making it a haven for birdlife. During your stay, you may spot a wide variety of marine life, including turtles, endangered dugongs or even Humpback whales when in season. Board a graceful dhow boat for the best way to discover the islands’ 125 species of bird, such as flamingos, bee-eaters, rare Green pigeons and plovers. Though we can’t blame you for being distracted by the incredible beaches, venture inland and you’ll be rewarded with sightings of crocodiles.
