Botswana Overview

Offering a well-rounded safari experience, Botswana holidays don’t just afford incredible wildlife sightings, but also a diverse range of scenery and activities. Botswana itself is of a size similar to France or Texas, and is home to a population of just two million. Though its human population may be tiny in comparison to its size, its animal kingdom is flourishing, with a dazzling array of species from the incomparable Big Five to over 150 species of reptile.

Where to go in Botswana

Holidays to Botswana could see you driving across the shimmering expanse of the Makgadikgadi salt pans or paddling through the wetlands of the Okavango Delta in a traditional mokoro canoe. The delta region is one of Botswana’s and the African continent’s most recognisable images, its vast scale stretching for 18,000 square kilometres with its web of waterways spreading like veins across the landscape, delivering vital nutrients to the scorched earth. A short flight from the gateway town of Maun will transport you over palm groves and swamps of papyrus to the watery oasis where resident animals include playful otters and colourful malachite kingfishers. The seasonal flood brings even more animals to bathe and drink from the waters, including stately elephants, rotund hippos, sleek cheetahs and packs of wild dogs. Explore the delta and its neighbouring Moremi Game Reserve in a mokoro – a dug-out canoe that glides effortlessly through the crystal-clear waters – for a unique perspective of a wildlife safari. The Chobe River provides a vital water source to the animals of Chobe National Park, a protected reserve spreading across 11,000 square kilometres of parkland. Here one of the earth's largest concentration of elephant moves across the savannah, easily spotted on a boat trip along the river.

Why visit Botswana

Botswana holidays are rewarding not only due to the concentration of animals that inhabit its many parks, but also for the country’s commitment to conservation and environmental protection. Each of its reserves is protected and the government is extremely strict on the impact of lodges and the tourism industry. Each lodge is committed to recycling everything from plastic to water, utilising solar energy and reducing consumption of Wifi and technology. Even so, the lodges of Botswana are of a very high standard compared to other African countries, and the guiding available is superb

Botswana and Victoria Falls

The combination of a holiday to Botswana twinned with a stop in Victoria Falls is enduringly popular. The colossal natural wonder of the falls thunders over a 1,700-metre-wide drop between the Zambian and Zimbabwean border, a short distance from Botswana. Combining the peaceful tranquillity of Botswana with the thundering majesty of Victoria Falls makes for an unforgettable journey into the spellbinding heart of Africa.
