Sicily offers something for everyone, as Destination Expert Lucy Greenwell discovered at Verdura, a family-friendly resort in Sciacca. With three golf courses, seven restaurants, a luxury spa and a kids’ club, a stay at Verdura is the perfect location for a luxurious and relaxing family holiday says Lucy…
Sciacca, home to the Verdura resort and the location for my stay on beautiful Sicily, is a historic port town with an abundance of cultural highlights and lots of restaurants and cafes to sample. The local Planeta family vineyard dates back to the 1600s and offers tasting tours and lunches to discover the best of Sicily; an absolute ‘must-do’!
itself is a huge resort spread across more than 230 hectares. Over 200 rooms and suites of differing sizes are arranged among the plentiful lawns and gardens; whether you opt for a Superior Deluxe Sea Front room, a suite or a family-friendly Deluxe suite, you’ll find a relaxing space to unwind and listen to the sound of the sea.
At the Verdura Spa I found the perfect space to relax, with its four Hydrotherapy pools, an indoor pool, Hammam, sauna and gym facilities, while the Rocco Forte Health Programmes provide three or six day tailor-made experiences with focuses on health, detox and anti-ageing. Bicycles are a great option to explore the vast expanses of the resort, and clay tennis courts and the fitness studio are available for active visitors.
Without a doubt Verdura offers one of the most stunning landscapes for golf. The resort has three pristine courses with a range of tailored courses and lessons from the resort’s PGA professionals meaning everyone from the seasoned expert to the complete beginner are taken care of.
Younger family members are well looked after too: from the golf academy tuition (ask for Jacamo who is especially good with lessons for young golfers!) to the Verduland Kids Club, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. In fact, Verduland caters for all ages with dedicated staff and a crèche area, alongside various play areas, cooking stations, quiet zones and an outdoor splash pool.
The resort has four bars and four restaurants, each offering a superb choice of Sicilian and Mediterranean cuisine. Beach restaurant Amare is open seasonally, providing stunning sea views to enjoy with an evening drink. Liolà is an authentic trattoria offering traditional Sicilian cuisine from arancini and pizza to pasta and parmigiana. Granita restaurant and bar is a great spot for relaxing with stunning terrace views, and formal restaurant Zagara has an intimate atmosphere perfect for a special dinner to celebrate your holiday.
For me, Verdura is the perfect destination for a family-friendly holiday to ensure everyone comes home feeling ultra-relaxed. The flight to Italy is short, and while the connection can take a little longer, the stunning holiday awaiting you at the end makes it more than worthwhile. Friendly staff, stunning facilities and a gorgeous setting make this resort a pearl on Sicily’s coastline and with so many activities to choose from, your stay will feel intimate and personalised even in Verdura’s vast landscape.
