Discover The Heartland States on a fly-drive and ranch holiday to Kansas and Oklahoma. Beginning and ending at a ranch (not included in the holiday price), visit the family run Moore Ranch in Kansas, where longhorn cattle drives are a favourite of ours. End with a stay at the welcoming Island Guest Ranch in Oklahoma. Get a true taste of cowboy life in both states at these traditional ranches.

In between each ranch stay, travel the iconic Route 66 and uncover a mass of museums and live music venues in the states of Kansas & Oklahoma.

Itinerary

Day 1
Travel to Wichita
Depart the UK on your flight to Wichita, Kansas. On arrival collect your car and drive downtown to your hotel.
Day 2
Full Day To Explore Wichita
Day 3
Wichita to Great Bend (114 miles)
Journey an hour to the Fort Larned National Historic Site, dating to the 1860s, to see the authentic army post with fort. Here troops took cover and were known as the Guardians of the Santa Fe Trail.
 
Situated only 30 minutes from Fort Larned is Great Bend, your last stop for the day. See the iconic landscape of Kansas, the 'Prairies and Plains'. Explore the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway, Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. In Downtown Great Bend, there are two specialist walks to enjoy; the Birdhouse Art Walk and the Kansas Quilt Walk.
Day 4
Great Bend, Kansas - Wichita, Kansas (114 miles)
Travel two hours back to Wichita today to explore the city. Wichita is home to eight shopping districts, 28 art galleries and 33 museums; the Wichita Art Museum, The Museums on the River Botanica and more. There are also many evening attractions including The Music Theatre of Wichita, The Wichita Symphony Orchestra and The Wichita Grand Opera as well as restaurants and bars.
Day 5
Wichita, Kansas - Tulsa, Oklahoma (161 miles)
Travel an hour and a half to Ponca City which was once an oil city in the 1800s and a town with wealthy homes and people. Make a visit to the Marland Mansion and the Standing Bear Native American Center.
 
Before reaching Tulsa, spend the morning and enjoy lunch in the city of Bartlesville, home to the history and legacy of the Frank Phillips Petroleum era. Visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Tower & Price Tower Arts Center as well as Frank Phillips' home, a mansion built for the owner of Phillips Petroleum.
 
After lunch, go to the Woolaroc Museum & Wildlife Preserve; a working ranch, museum and wildlife preserve displaying artefacts from tribes showcasing the cultural history of the state. Arrive in Tulsa in the late afternoon and here discover plenty of culture and entertainment. This includes the Brady Arts District, the Woody Guthrie Center, Philbrook Museum of Art and Gilcrease Museum of European and American Art. Tulsa sits beside the old Route 66 and in the evenings find a spot to listen to some live music.

Tulsa - Oklahoma City (106 miles)
Before getting on the road this morning, visit the Woody Guthrie Center, one of Oklahoma's stars, Philbrook Gardens & Museum, with its impressive art collection, and the Gilcrease Museum, showcasing American West artefacts.
 
Drive Route 66, the Mother Road today, from Tulsa to Oklahoma City - a real highlight of your Kansas & Oklahoma fly drive holiday! En route there's plenty of places to stop including museums, the Rock Cafe, iconic Lincoln Motel and of course the Route 66 Interpretative Centre at Chandler. For a refreshment stop, pause at POPS for an amazing variety of soda, over a hundred flavours!
 
Spend the rest of the afternoon in Oklahoma City and a visit to the National Cowboy and World Heritage Museum is not to be missed. In the evening, head to Bricktown's canal area where there is music and dining. For something active, go kayaking and canoeing at the centre in the Boathouse District. There's even a Banjo Museum here.

How far in advance should I book my holiday?

Many customers are under the illusion that booking late secures the best prices. This is often not the case and it is advisable to book early especially if travelling in peak seasons such as Christmas, Easter or school holidays. Many hotels and airlines actually offer special “Early Booking Offers” so you are able to secure the best price early on.

I don’t know what board basis to book. Can I eat out locally, should I consider All Inclusive?
