A TRANQUIL BACKWATER

A five-day itinerary absorbing the sights in and around the capital city, Vientiane and the world heritage site of Luang Prabang, is the perfect introduction to this tranquil backwater. Vientiane is far from what you might expect from a capital city, it's relaxed, sleepy even, with a charm that reflects the slow development of the country as a whole.

LAID-BACK VIENTIANE

Sitting on a bend in the Mekong River, the tree-lined boulevards of the capital are awash with ancient Lao culture. Interesting temples such as Wat Si Muang and Pha That Luang, as well as the Patuxai monument - a French/Asian hybrid of l'Arc de Triomphe, provide a fascinating day's sightseeing. We also visit the lively Talatt Sao market, the perfect place to get acquainted with the ever-welcoming Laotians.

SPIRITUAL LUANG PRABANG

Luang Prabang, or the 'Land of a Million Elephants', awaits after a short flight south, its heritage status helping preserve traditional culture and more than 30 beautifully gilded temples. As the spiritual centre of Laos, saffron robed monks fill the narrow streets between the striking French colonial buildings at dawn, collecting alms from the local community.
