Royal Gujarat, Ajanta & Ellora
Suggested Itinerary of West India
FROM DELHI WEST TO AHMEDABAD
Arrive in Delhi and enjoy a full day to explore this magnificent city, experiencing the contrast between the historic Old City and the vibrancy of New Delhi. Then to the walled city of Ahmedabad, a treasure chest of Hindu and Muslim architecture – visit mosques, temples, a textiles museum and local market.
GUJARAT HEARTLANDS - DASADA, RANN OF KUTCH AND BHUJ
From your base at Dasada, explore the little Rann of Kutch, a barren, salt-cracked desert that divides Gujarat in two. Here you might see the Asiatic wild ass, cranes and even jackal or jungle cats. Then, driving further through this extraordinary landscape, you'll arrive at the desert city of Bhuj. In this historic town and the surrounding environs you'll see nesting flamingos from December to February, the brilliance of the Mirror Palace and traditional village craftsmen at work.
PALACES, LIONS AND BEACHES - FROM GONDAL TO BHAVNAGAR
Naulakha Palace at Gondal is one of Gujarat’s most striking, rising above the banks of the Gondali with lavishly furnished interiors. At Sasangir, you'll visit the Gir National Park, home to the last surviving Asiatic lions. Then on to Diu, the tiny Portugueseinfluenced island off Gujarat's southern tip. Diu's Nagoa Beach offers pure white sand and crystal blue water – so just lie back and relax or take time out to explore the island's rich history. After the tranquillity of Diu, fortified Bhavnagar is riot of colour and sound, with an ancient bazaar and a hilltop temple that almost touches the sky.
LIVING CITY, HAUNTING CAVES – MUMBAI AND AURANGABAD
Dynamic, vibrant and as fluid as the water that surrounds it, Mumbai is India's city of dreams; a microcosm of modern India. Mumbai's carved Elephanta Caves will carry you back in time, as will the rock-hewn Caves of Ajanta at Aurangabad. Most spectacular are the Ellora caves, comprising more than 34 temples – Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Shaivaite – all chiselled by hand from a single massive rock.
