Suggested Itinerary of India

TEA AND HISTORY

Arrive in Calcutta and explore the historic monuments of the Raj while experiencing the vitality and intensity of a youthful city on the move. After the bustle, the clear mountain air of Darjeeling will refresh and from Glenburn you might glimpse Everest. Then visit a Buddhist monastery and a traditional tea plantation.

DELHI, AGRA AND JAIPUR - THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE

In and around these three cities are some of India's most spectacular artefacts. Old Delhi offers a portrait of medieval life with the Red Fort, the Jama Masjid mosque and the ancient perfume market. In Agra, imposing forts and elegant tombs are mere curtain raisers before the main event: the Taj Mahal at sunset. A ride on an elephant up to the Amber Fort is the highlight of Jaipur, with the opportunity to look down on the Pink City from the Fort's imposing ramparts.

WEST COAST ODYSSEY

A bustling seaport with a distinct colonial flavour, Mumbai has always been the buzzing gateway to India. In total contrast, an hour by launch will bring you to Elephanta Island and the hauntingly beautiful carvings of Buddhist cave temples. Then south to Cochin, city on the water, shaped by a history of Arab, Jewish, Dutch and Portuguese settlers, memorable for the extraordinary Chinese fishing nets lining the shore. From Cochin to Kumarakom and the chance to unwind in a village of islands, coconut groves and mangrove forests, abundant in wildlife and the scent of flowers.

SOUTHERN ENCHANTMENT

Thekkady is the home of the Periyar National Park, and whilst you may glimpse a tiger the main draw is the herds of Indian elephants. On the Periyar Lake, a boat safari will afford views of numerous animals and birds; followed by a spice plantation walk. At Madurai you'll visit the Shree Meenakshi, one of the most spectacular and important temples in India. Then fly to Madras for a chance to relax by the sea at Covelong and visit the ancient cities of Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram before your flight home.
