The Namib Desert, the oldest on the planet, runs along the length of the coastline whilst to the interior the Kalahari Desert reaches all the way to Botswana. The wild and desolate Skeleton Coast with its numerous shipwrecks is the chosen habitat of large seal colonies. The giant shifting red sand dunes of the Namib Desert at Sossusvlei are the highest in the world and stretch inland for some 80-130 kilometres creating the most awe-inspiring sight.
For exciting game viewing, Damaraland is home to the rare desert elephant and black rhino whilst lions and giraffes blend into the background of the white saltpans in the Etosha National Park.
