Old Mission Santa Monica
Day 2 - Santa Barbara
Explore Santa Barbara, known as the American Riviera, we recommend visiting the Old Mission and Montecito – the latter is where many celebrities have a home including Oprah Winfrey. Santa Barbara is a charming town; it’s located in what appears to be a seaside canyon and valley, with exclusive neighbourhoods dotted along the hillside. Drive to the Pier where there are some lovely little shops for souvenirs and places to purchase snacks and Smores too. Here look out to the long, unspoilt b...

Day 3 - Santa Barbara
Now that you’re acquainted with this charming town, go on a wine walking tour. It’s a great way to enjoy the wines of southern California without having to drive between the wineries. The wine on sale here is largely produced in the nearby Santa Ynez Mountains. Go from wine tasting room to wine tasting room, noticing their differing styles including the Grassini Family Vineyards, the Carr Winery and Sandford.

Day 4 - Santa Barbara – San Diego (218 miles)
Travel down the Pacific Coast for approximately four hours until you arrive in San Diego. We recommend stopping for a pit stop at Joe’s Crab Shack – where there are huge platters of seafood such as calamari and shrimp. The landscape begins to change on this drive and desert-like peaks and sand dunes soon emerge. You’ll pass Camp Pendleton where army and marine troops train – you might even see them in action there. Arrive into San Diego and check-in to your hotel for your stay here.

Day 5 - San Diego
One of the attractions of the city is a visit to the impressive USS Midway. This is arguably the most historic and famous of the US Navy Aircraft Carrier Fleet, and has been stationed here for 10 years. Learn from the veterans their passion for the vessel and their stories, an interesting way to delve into the military history of the United States. In the evening, we recommend heading out to the Gaslamp Quarter, and to the Altitude Sky Bar, 22 floors up in the sky. This can get busy when ...

Day 6 - San Diego
Spend the morning at the world-famous San Diego Zoo. We recommend avoiding travelling on a Sunday morning when traffic is at its most hectic. The zoo has a great focus on conservation and there is a lot of work being done here to help endangered species and preserve wildlife. We recommend boarding one of the audio bus tours that take place here.

Day 7 - San Diego – Santa Monica (134 miles)
Travel onto Santa Monica today, approximately two hours away, up the coast. Santa Monica is a world away from the vast Metropolis of Los Angeles. We recommend keeping your car if it is a short stay so that you can drive easily to quirky and hip Venice Beach or the exclusive areas of Malibu and the Palisades. Check-in to your hotel for your stay here.

Day 8 - Santa Monica
Santa Monica is fantastic for active couples and families. The Old Pier is worth a visit and has some great rides including the rollercoaster and Pacific Pier Ferris Wheel. We recommend boarding the wheel at sunset for some fantastic views from up high. Be sure to walk a couple of the 70 miles of beach that stretches along this coastline. Outside the Loews Santa Monica Hotel, find the famous ‘Muscle Beach’ where there are always plenty of people working out. Santa Monica has a large focus...

Day 9 - Santa Monica
Today we recommend enjoying some of Santa Monica’s charms including the beach, shops and art galleries. Perhaps go on a bike tour – the roads are easy to navigate and there a few hills. You might wish to travel to the exclusive neighbourhood of Brentwood passing numerous mansions, and onto the bakeries and ice-cream shops. We recommend the Sweet Lady Jane Bakery where there are some treats on offer.
