Hotel Overview

Insider's View

  • Celebrate that special occasion with a private dinner and a selection of over 2000 wines in the restaurant, Wine.

Located on the beach near Koggala, 35 minutes drive from the historic town of Galle and 3 ½ hours from Colombo airport, The Fortress is a deluxe hotel with a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. The property is styled after nearby Galle’s Dutch Fort, combining historic Dutch and Portugese architecture with modern design.

The Fortress offers just 49 rooms, chic and contemporary in style and furnishings. Each room features an oversize bed, modern amenities and stunning bathrooms with huge freestanding bathtubs. The Fortress Rooms are the only room type not to face the sea. Ocean Rooms and Beach Rooms have direct sea views and are located on the upper and ground floors respectively, with balcony or terrace. Larger Ocean Lofts are also available.

The Fortress boasts a fantastic choice of food and dining options including the unique glass cave wine cellar! Other facilities include a spa, swimming pool, gym and kids club (although the majority of the guests are couples and adults). Watersports can be arranged nearby. Whale watching excursions are possible between November and April.

Customer Hotel Reviews

R Phillips says:

The excursion to Hiriwaduna was one of the highlights of our trip as was the hotel at Ulagalla Resort. On days 3 and 5 the location of the hotels in relation to the excursions could have been better as they were 75 minutes drive away, however overall the holiday was one of the best we have ever had. Thank you!

How To Book

How do I talk to a specialist in Sri Lanka holidays?

We are happy to give you a call back to discuss your holiday at a convenient time for you or we welcome you to come to our office in central London to discuss your holiday in detail.

Why use our specialist service?

Our destination experts provide a personalised service to tailormake your dream holiday. Within our experienced team we have visited most of the properties we feature and will be able to give you expertise and specialist knowledge from our first hand experience. You will be offered a direct telephone number, so you are able to speak to the same specialist from the time you pick up the phone until your documents are sent out.

Do I have to travel on certain dates and only do the itineraries suggested?

No, we tailormake all our holidays and subject to availability you will be able to travel on any date. The itineraries and holidays on our website are for inspiration and are suggestions only, you can change any aspect according to your personal requirements and available spend.

How far in advance should I book my holiday?

Many customers are under the illusion that booking late secures the best prices. This is often not the case and it is advisable to book early especially if travelling in peak seasons such as Christmas, Easter or school holidays. Many hotels and airlines actually offer special “Early Booking Offers” so you are able to secure the best price early on.

I don’t know what board basis to book. Can I eat out locally, should I consider All Inclusive?

It's always a difficult decision to make before you travel. Call one of our destination experts, who will be happy to advise you on local restaurants and prices you can expect to pay in resort.

What can I do when I get there?

There are many excursions, activities and highlights that are not to be missed out on, whilst in the country. Please contact our experts for advise on whether to prebook these before travel.

What financial protection do you offer?

When booking through Western and Oriental, if your flight is delayed or cancelled due to bad weather or you have a problem in resort it is our responsibility you are taken care of. We offer a 24 hour emergency number to assist with any issues you may have in resort and all of our flight inclusive holidays are financially protected through ATOL bonding for your protection.

Sri Lanka is affected by two different monsoon seasons affecting opposite sides of the islands, so this makes the weather patterns quite complex. The Yala monsoon occurs between May and August affecting the south western part of the island, followed by a transitional period in September and a dry season between December and March. The Maha monsoon brings wet weather to the north east of the island between October and March, followed by a dry season between May and September. The driest time to visit the island can be in the inter monsoon periods of March/April and August/September, inland the Cultural Triangle's driest months are normally June/July/August. October and November can be quite wet months. In the wetter seasons, rain normally occurs in short sharp downpours and there are many dry spells of sunshine, so can be a great time to take advantage of special offers. It’s worth noting that the basic patterns described can vary from year to year due to global warming.
