La Reata Ranch

Set on the shores of Lake Diefenbaker in Southwest Saskatchewan, La Reata Ranch occupies nine miles of water frontage and 5000 acres of land. Since 1996, this working cattle ranch has been owned and operated by George Gaber who offers up to 16 guests a chance to experience the real Canadian cowboy life.
La Reata is situated a two hour drive from Saskatoon Airport (transfers available) and is a twenty minute drive from the nearest town, Kyle. At La Reata, breakfast and dinner are served in the cook shack and may include home baked goods, Canadian beef and fresh coffee. Lunch is normally taken on the range around a campfire. Relax after dinner in the Old West Saloon listening to country music, playing darts or pool or learning to two-step dance. There may be even be a game of horseshoes or a campfire! Beer can be purchased at the ranch and hard liquor can be bought in a store nearby or requested in one the supply runs made by the ranch.
When is the ranch open and what day does riding begin?
The ranch is open 19 May - 13 October. Transfers from Saskatoon Airport are available on a Monday, Thursday and Saturday. If you are arriving and are driving yourself, you are welcome to start any day.
What are the types of rides on offer and how often will I ride?
During your stay at the ranch if you are a beginner you can partake in western riding lessons in the arena. Everyday you may check the herd (around 200 cows and many calves), explore the ranch on horse, rope and work with cattle or barrel race and check and move the cows on almost a daily basis.
About the horses
The ranch owns around 25 horses.
What else can I do at the ranch?
In the summer, the ranch is a great place to go swimming, boating, water skiing and canoeing on the lake. There are often evening outings to the White Bear Saloon located 22 kilometres away.
Is the ranch suited to children?
La Reata welcomes families and children love joining the ranch in the summer with the many water based activities available too as well as the riding.
What other attractions are there in the area?
Rodeo trips and guided tours can also be arranged by the ranch.
19 May: On the first week of the season enjoy daily horseback trips to check the herd and treat the newborn as well as check the fences.
03-06 June: Brand the offspring, learn how to rope and wrestle the calves during this special time. The ranch recommends guests stay a good time before the branding days to familiarise themselves with the horses.
04-11 October: Round up week involves rounding up the cattle, checking and counting them and then moving them back into the pastures.
La Reata Ranch Room Details
The ranch has 6 log cabins decorated in a wooden western style and featuring two queen size beds or a queen bed. Each has a private bathroom with toilet and shower. Weekly cleaning, bedding and toiletries are provided.
One and a Half Story Cabins
These feature loft bedrooms and accommodate up to four people.

How far in advance should I book my holiday?
Many customers are under the illusion that booking late secures the best prices. This is often not the case and it is advisable to book early especially if travelling in peak seasons such as Christmas, Easter or school holidays. Many hotels and airlines actually offer special “Early Booking Offers” so you are able to secure the best price early on.
I don’t know what board basis to book. Can I eat out locally, should I consider All Inclusive?
