Hotel Overview

Situated approximately 4.5 hours north of Vancouver, the Chilcotin Ranch is set in the beautiful Chilcotin Mountain region. The ranch offers the popular ‘Cowboy Ranch Based Trips’ and ‘Camp Based Pack Trips’. In total there are over 100 wilderness-related programs and experiences including hiking trips, yoga retreats, fly fishing packages and native tours.

Chilcotin Ranch is easily reached by car but the stunning wilderness is only accessible by horse, foot or float plane. This pristine and remote wilderness is home to bighorn sheep, moose, mule deer, mountain goats, wolves and black/grizzly bears. A wonderful benefit of a stay here is that it is an almost bug free zone and a generally sunny and dry climate with not much chance of rain! The warm western style Ranch House offers five en suite rooms and four twin/bunk configuration rooms. Alternatively, upgrade to a private log cabin. Meals are served family style with fresh fruit and vegetables and dishes include barbecued ribs and candied salmon; the ranch does allow you to bring your own alcohol but does not provide any.

Cowboy Ranch Based Trips include accommodation in the lodge, three meals a day and two half day rides or hikes as well as; guided trail rides, target shooting, lariat throwing and guided hiking. Ranch based activities on offer for all ranch stays include BBQ and bonfires, swimming, archery, gold panning, wildlife viewing and horse logging.

Popular pack trips are the 4, 7, 10 or 13 day Explorer Trips and the 4 or 7 day Mountain Challenger. The former involves stays at two or three camps (there are several camps in the 5000 square kilometre operating area) and the opportunity to learn the skills of a wrangler, whilst the latter is for the more advanced rider and goes deep into the mountains, you often take your camp with you here. Some camps will be fixed with permanent structures whilst others are tented.

When is the ranch open and what day does riding begin?
Chilcotin Ranch is open year round with riding and check-in on any day.
What are the types of rides on offer and how often will I ride?
Chilcotin offers daily riding excursions during ranch stays. You will receive an introduction to western riding on your Cayuse horse and enjoy rides including the River Ride or Eldorado Pass. For advanced riders, the alpine is nearby where you can enjoy stunning mountain views all around you.
About the horses
The ranch owns approximately 40 Cayuses horses which are from the Cariboo-Chicotin region where horses are free to roam around. By nature these horses are calm and are able to take on all terrain and challenges including crossing rivers and streams, climbing up narrow trails and going down steep areas.
What else can I do at the ranch?
When not out on horseback or on a hike, swim in the nearby lake, read in the library, play a board game, enjoy western dancing on the outdoor dance floor, horse shoe toss games, baseball, soccer and board and card games. Not included in your stay but available at the ranch are wildlife viewing, bear defence classes, horse logging and shoeing, guided fishing, stargazing, gold mine shaft exploration, archery, rolling hay, feeding horses, learning bush-craft skills and experience the bush sauna.
Is the ranch suited to children?
Chilcotin Ranch welcomes children and offers child discounts for children 7 and under sharing with their parents. Children will enjoy the activities on offer aside from riding included in the stay such as swimming in the lake, gold panning, gold mine exploration and fishing.
What other attractions are there in the area?
Nearby attractions in the Chilcotin Mountains include heli-skiing, hiking, biking and fishing.
Special Weeks
Special trips include 4 day Wolf Viewing, Grizzling Viewing, Ranch Mountain Biking, Multi-Sport Summer Adventure and 4 Day Yoga Retreats as well as hut based alpine ride hiking and camp based mountain biking trips.
