Sepilok is famous for being the Orangutan sanctuary located in Kabili-Sepilok Nature Reserve, 26km from Sandakan. It's puropse is to rescue abandoned and orphaned orang utans and teach them to fend fo themselves and hopfully gain some confidence fo when they are released back into the wild. Its a must see for anyone visiting this wonderful island.

Sakau, a tiny village along the Kinabatangan River, 60 miles from Sandakan offers a base to explore the rivers amazing wildlife. It i a safe haven for animals that have lost their habitats to plantations and logging and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2006.
