Holidays in Mt Rushmore & the Surrounds (South Dakota)
Discover the treasures of eastern South Dakota with visits to Mt Rushmore, Deadwood, Rapid City and Badlands National Park. Known for its 'Great Faces, Great Places', South Dakota is home to the iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial, standing at 60 feet high. The carved faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln look out at the surrounding beauty. The summer is a particularly nice time to see the monument when there is an evening lighting ceremony.
Situated nearby, the Crazy Horse Memorial is an impressive monument honouring the native American warrior. To the south of Mt Rushmore are Keystone and Custer State Park and Keystone. Be sure to visit the the Big Thunder Gold Mine where you can pan for gold and spot the bison, goats, elk and antelope in the sprawling park. To the north of Mt Rushmore is Rapid City, the gateway to the Badlands National Park and also, the Dinosaur Park. A highlight of a stay in South Dakota is a visit to historic Deadwood, a gold rush town and the death place of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock. There's much more to Deadwood today with an Art Alley and bustling Main Street Square.
