Alabama Holidays

Holidays in Alabama

‘The Skies Are So Blue’ in Alabama said the band Lynyrd Skynyrd in their famous song ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. Alabama is bursting with history from the Civil Rights movement to the sounds of the South. The state has more than historical and cultural cities; the beaches are a treat waiting to be enjoyed on a fly drive holiday. Lining the south of the state are 32 miles of white sand beaches where fishing, dolphin watching and relaxing on the beach are part and parcel of a stay here. Soak up the vibe at the numerous beach bars and seafood restaurants such as the Hangout and Lulu’s.

Travel from here into the first capital of the French Louisiana Territory and American Mardi Gras, Mobile, where golf enthusiasts will rejoice at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and sights worth visiting include the beautiful southern homes in the Oakleigh Historic Complex and the USS Alabama battleship. Taste the seafood from the fishing village of Bayou Le Batre, which appeared in the famous ‘Forest Gump’ film. Before arriving at Montgomery, visit the town of Monroeville, the home of Harper Lee, the author of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’. Discover the history of Montgomery where Martin Luther King Jr once lived and preached and Rosa Parks was arrested when she famously refused to give up her seat on a bus.

History flows through the state into Birmingham; experience both Civil Rights and music history by visiting the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, witnessing the sounds of the 16th Street Baptist Church on a Sunday morning and visiting the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. Go outdoors in Birmingham to the zip lining course and nature trails of Red Mountain Park, or visit the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. Not to be missed is an outing to The US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, a fantastic experience for all ages as the world's largest space museum and home to Space Camp. Hear the music in Muscle Shoals and visit the FAME Recording Studios to see the piano played by Aretha Franklin and where many artists came to record.
