Dominica sits mid way along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, boasting unspoilt nature, tropical rainforests bursting with vibrant wildlife, and more national parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites then you can shake a stick at. However don’t be fooled: among the meandering jungle footpaths, cascading waterfalls and world-class hiking opportunities, there lies ample opportunity for relaxation – the kind of relaxation that only comes from listening to the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean while enjoying a body exfoliation or massage; the type that comes from stretching out on a sun lounger in the knowledge that you are separated from the stress of day-to-day life on a floating tropical paradise in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The undiscovered, and thus tranquil and unspoilt, gem of the Caribbean
(as it has been affectionately named) provides the perfect back drop for a calming getaway, where troubles melt away and fade into the sunset, and ‘relaxing’ doesn’t have to mean being glued to the sand all day (unless you want to be, of course). From yoga in the rainforest to soaking in the multiple natural sulphur hot pools, the lush tropical landscape here lends itself to wellness, and finding that personal equilibrium you thought you’d never see again. Aromatherapy and holistic treatments are also available, working with your body to ensure you feel at your best for the entirety of your stay and even once you’re back home, poring over holiday photos. Here are our top three ways to relax in Dominica:
We love a trip to Jungle Bay’s Spa
du Soleil: whether you are staying here or not, the five private studios overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and varied selection of treatments mean you can tailor your relaxation schedule to you. We particularly love the detoxifying body rub!
Take some time out in one of the meditation corners at Secret Bay
, dotted around the resort; our particular favourite is the Wild Orchid Garden, with a cliff edge backdrop and the Caribbean Sea to gaze out. Getting back to basics has never been so beautiful…
The beauty of Dominica
is that the beauty and tranquil surroundings lend themselves to relaxation without you having to contribute much; even if you don’t feel like a spa treatment, just a stroll through the lush vegetation, picking up the scent of the tropical flowers and the echo of the waves crashing against the cliff edge, sets the scene for unwinding. Your hotel will be able to advise you on the best routes, or find your own way – there are no wrong turns in Dominica.
If you can’t make it to Dominica this summer, never fear! You can still get your tropical island fix with this nutritious juice recipe: Jugo de Avena (Oatmeal and milk drink), a refreshing beverage perfect for breakfast or a summertime snack substitute for kids!
To make 6 servings for you and your (very lucky!) friends you will need
1 cup of oatmeal
1 quarter skimmed milk
1 cup of sugar
2 cups of ice
Juice from 3 limes
Mix the milk and oatmeal. Blend at a high speed for 3 minutes and sieve to get rid of the solids.
Add sugar to taste – can also have without sugar!
Chill in the freezer until cold to prevent curdling!
Remove from freezer, add ice and stir
Slowly pour in the lime juice and stir constantly.
If you are dairy intolerant, don’t fear! You can swap the milk for water!
